Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled substance useful as a monomer for liquid crystal polyester in high purity and in high yield, by reducing 4-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-3- cyclohexene-1-ol.

CONSTITUTION: 4-(4-Hydroxyphenyl)-3-cyclohexene-1-ol is reduced with hydrogen preferably in the presence of Pd derivative in a solvent such as methanol at 20W60°C to give the titled substance. The amount of the catalyst used is 0.0005W0.01g atom (calculated as metallic atom of dehydrogenating catalyst) based on 1mol. of the raw material and the amount of the solvent used is 5W20 times as much as that of the raw material. Hydrogen pressure is ≤5kg/cm2G, preferably ≤atmospheric pressure.
