Abstract:
PURPOSE: To efficiently obtain the subject compound useful as a raw material for polymers having a high refractive index, heat resistance and active hydrogen group by reacting an acrylate compound with an aldehyde compound such as formaldehydes in the presence of a basic ion exchange resin.
CONSTITUTION: An acrylate compound expressed by formula I {R is 1-18C alkyl, 3-10C cycloalkyl, aryl, 1-8C hydroxyalkyl, the formula (CH2)mR1R2 [R1 and R2 are 1-8C alkyl; (m) is 2-5], the formula (CH2)mN(R1R2R3)+.M- (R3 is the same species as that of R1; M- is Cl-, Br-, SO42-, CH3COO-, etc.), etc.} (e.g. ethyl acrylate) is allowed to react with one or more aldehyde compounds such as formaldehyde, trioxane and an oxymethylene compound expressed by formula II [(q) is 1-100; X is H, 1-8C alkyl or 3-10C cycloalkyl] in the presence of a basic ion exchange resin to afford the objective readily separated and purified α-hydroxymethyl acrylate expressed by formula III in high yield and selectivity.
