Title:
PRODUCTION OF ALPHA-PHENYLETHYL ALCOHOL
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP3348591
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress an amount of ethylbenzene generated as a by-product and obtain α-phenylethyl alcohol in high selectivity by hydrogenating acetophenone by flow reaction using a fixed bed in the presence of a copper- based catalyst and recycling a part of the reacted liquid as a raw material liquid for hydrogenation reaction.
SOLUTION: Acetophenone is hydrogenated, preferably at 60-150°C under 10-100kg/cm2 pressure by a flow reaction using a fixed bed in the presence of a copper-based catalyst (preferably a complex oxide-based catalyst comprising CuO-Cr2O3 and CuO-ZnO) to provide the objective α-phenylethyl alcohol. Further, a part of the reacted liquid after hydrogenation is recycled as a raw material liquid for hydrogenation reaction. The CuO content in the catalyst is preferably 20-80wt.% and the size of the catalyst is preferably 1-6mm. An amount of the catalyst used is preferably 0.1-20hr-1 as a space velocity of the raw material liquid to a catalytic layer. When the reacted liquid is recycled, a weight ratio of the recycled reaction liquid to the raw material liquid newly fed is preferably 0.5-10.
