To obtain an aromatic carboxylic: acrid aryl ester in a simple operation at low cost by transesterification between an aromatic carboxylic acid aliphatic eater and an aromatichydroxy compound.
This compound, an aromatic carboxylic aryl ester of the formula Ar-COO-Ar' is obtained by reaction between an aromatic carboxylic acid aliphatic ester of the formula Ar-COO-R [R is a 1-4C alkyl; Ar is a nonsubstituted or (alkyl-, alkoxy-, aryl-, aryloxy- or halogen-substituted) phenyl) and an aromatic hydroxy compound of the formula Ar'-OH (Ar' is the same as Ar) in the presence of a titanium compound of the formula Ti(OX)4 (X is a 1-4C alkyl or aryl) or a titanium compound adduct of the formula Ti(OX)4.XOH as catalyst at 60-250°C for 0.001-10h. The amount of the catalyst to be used is 0.0001-5mol% based on the aromatic carboxylic acid aliphatic ester, and the catalyst is, for example, titanium tetraisopropoxide.
