Title:
PRODUCTION OF BENZYL ALCOHOL
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP3807683
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently obtain the subject compound without using a base by a new method for hydrolyzing benzyl chloride under specific conditions and stopping the reaction at a point of time when the conversion of benzyl chloride is incomplete and to avoid problems of formation of NaCl and waste liquor.
SOLUTION: Benzyl chloride is hydrolyzed in the molar ratio of benzyl chloride to water of 1:10 to 1:70, preferably l:20 to 1:50 at 80-180°C, preferably 90-160°C without adding a base and a water-soluble organic solvent until the conversion ratio of benzyl chloride reaches 35-99%, preferably 45-85%. The reaction time is preferably 4-120 minutes. Preferably the reaction is carried out while vigorously stirring the reaction mixture by using a static mixer, ultrasonic wave, etc. In the case of the reaction at ≥100°C, the reaction is performed under pressure due to vapor pressure and the excessive pressure is preferably ≤25 bar. Preferably hydrochloric acid prepared as a by-product is concentrated and industrially reused.
