Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain the subject high-purity compound as a crosslinkable monomer, widely useful for fiber treating agent, photosensitive resin, adhesive, coating compound, etc., in high yield by directly using an industrially obtainable aqueous solution of acrylamide and subjecting to hydroxymethylation reaction.
CONSTITUTION: For example, an aqueous solution of acrylamide (having 30-60% concentration) readily obtainable by catalytic hydration method is allowed to react with formaldehyde or paraformaldehyde (37% formalin or 70-95% paraformaldehyde may be used) in the presence of a basic catalyst, preferably a catalyst containing a quaternary ammonium compound, a molybdate and a tungstate, then the reaction solution is concentrated at ≤80°C at pH6-8 under reduced pressure, crystallized and separated to give crystalline N- methylolacrylamide. This method has no scattering of powder but has ready handleability, high safety, no by-production and easy purification. The mother liquor after separation of formed substance is readily recycled and used, and crystal having uniform particle diameter is obtained.
