Title:
PRODUCTION OF GLASS
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPH04175291
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
PURPOSE:To remove impurities and to improve heat characteristics, optical characteristics, etc., in production of glass by sol-gel method from fine particles of a metal alkoxide and a metal oxide as a main raw material by immersing the main raw material in a solution of hydrochloric acid at a certain stage wherein the gelatinous material is porous during a sintering process. CONSTITUTION:Fine particles of a metal alkoxide (e.g. ethyl silicate) and a metal oxide (e.g. silica) are used as a main raw material to prepare a liquid sol having the objective glass component composition. Then the liquid sol is put in a closed container of desired shape, gelatinized to form a wet gel, which is dried. Then the dried gel is sintered and, during the sintering process, the gelatinous substance is immersed in a solution of hydrochloric acid at a stage wherein the gelatinous material is porous and not densified to separate and to remove impurities, hydroxyl groups, etc., from the gelatinous material. Then the gelatinous material is sintered and vitrified to give glass suitable for optical parts, etc.
