A web 10 moves in a coating apparatus, and a liq. coating material is applied to a surface of the moving web to form a wet coating 14. The wet coating 14 of the coated web is smoothed with a smoothing apparatus 20, which contains a flexible smoothing blade 22 holded at a certain position by a blade clamp 24. The blade 22 has two major surfaces, contains a conductive layer, and is positioned so that a portion of one major surface is in contact with the wet coating 14 so that electrostatic charge on the coated web is dissipated. Thus, a magnetic recording medium can be produced while minimizing electrostatic charge buildup during production.
