PURPOSE: To obtain the subject nematocide rich in α-terthienyl, having excellent nematocidal activity and containing active component suitable for mass- production, by culturing hair root of marigold infected with a specific microorganism and extracting the cultured product with an organic solvent.
CONSTITUTION: A plant body of marigold which as a plant of family Compositae such as French or African marigold containing α-terthienyl having nematocidal activity is infected with Agrobacterium rhizogenes e.g. by incising the plant body. The produced transformed hair root of the marigold having good proliferability is cultured in a medium containing gibberellin as the sole plant hormone or absolutely free from plant hormone at 15W35°C preferably under dark condition. The obtained cultured product is dried and extracted with an organic solvent such as n-hexane or acetone to obtain a substance rich in α- terthienyl exhibiting especially excellent nematocidal activity against root lesion nematocide. The substance is used as an active component for the objective nematocide.
