Abstract:

PURPOSE: To synthesize the titled compound having highly optical purity, readily and in high yield, by reducing an optically active 1,2-epoxyalkane which is readily obtained by microbial oxidation of an end olefin with lithium aluminum hydride.

CONSTITUTION: An optically active 1,2-epoxyalkane[e.g., (+)-1,2-epoxyoctane, etc.,] shown by the formula I (R is 4W12C alkyl; star mark of C is asymmetric carbon atom) is reduced with lithium aluminum hydride, to give an optically active 2-alkanol[e.g., (+)-2-octanol, etc.,] shown by the formula II.

USE: A raw material for synthesizing various ferroelectric liquid crystals.
