Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To readily obtain the subject compound useful as an intermediate for physiologically active substances such as medicines or agrichemicals and fine chemicals by oxidizing a specific aralkyl compound in the presence of a specific optically active manganese complex catalyst and carrying out asymmetric hydroxylation of benzyl position.
SOLUTION: A compound of formula I {Ar is phenyl or naphthyl which may be substituted with a 1-4C alkyl (Rx), a 1-4C alkoxy (Ry), cyano, etc.; R5 is Rx; when Rx or Ry is substituted at ortho position of Ar, the group may be bonded to R5 to form a 4-8C ring} is oxidized in the presence of an optically active manganese complex catalyst of formula II [R1 to R4 are each H, Rx which may be substituted with Rx or a halogen, phenyl, etc., which may be substituted with Rx, Ry, etc.; R is H, R1, Ry, etc.; X- is a salt-forming anion; Y is H, a halogen, Rx, Ry, etc.] to provide the objective compound of formula III (* represents the absolute coordination of the carbon is R or S).
