PURPOSE: To securely position a head into a read-in zone by bringing a stopper under an inhibiting state or a noninhibiting state for different format recording disks correspondingly.
CONSTITUTION: In the case of using the recording disk 1, when its cartridge 3 is loaded into the recording and reproducing device, a head 10 is fed by a linear motor 9 in the direction of X2 and stopped at the stopper 17 without permitting a releasing lever 20 to push the cartridge 3 because of a notch 12 on the cartridge 3. In this position, a lens 7 is brought just under the read-in zone 1a to enable an initial setting. Then, in the case of using the recording disk 2, when its cartridge 4 is loaded into the recording and reproducing device, since there is no notch on the cartridge 4, the releasing lever 20 is pushed by the cartridge 3, interlocking the stopper 17 to be turned in the direction of an arrow B. Now, when the head 10 is fed by the motor 9 in the direction of X2, it is stopped at an abutting part 14b of a chassis 14 without abutting the stopper 17, and in this position the lens 7 is brought just under the read-in zone 2a to enable the initial setting.
