To provide a refined tea extract having extremely low caffeine content, extremely high content of gallate-type theaflavins in total theaflavins and high safety, and a method for producing the refined tea extract.
The method for producing the refined tea extract comprises a step to introduce a tea extract obtained from black tea with a water-containing organic solvent through a column packed with an adsorbent in an amount of 0.1-0.5 times volume based on the volume of the adsorbent packed in the column at a space velocity of 0.5-5.0 h-1, and a step to elute the fraction of the refined tea extract by passing a 40-80 vol% ethanol aqueous solution in an amount of 0.5-10 times volume based on the volume of the adsorbent packed in the column. The refined tea extract essentially free from caffeine and having a gallate-type theaflavin content of 80 mass% in the total theaflavins can be produced by the method.
