To gently control the over-speed of a multiple cylinder internal combustion engine with fuel injectors corresponding to an increase in engine speed, maintain a proper supply amount of fuel and stabilize the condition of combustion.
This rotation control method is applicable to the internal combustion engine having multiple cylinders and fuel injectors 14 for detecting a throttle opening and an engine speed and controlling the injection amount of fuel with the throttle opening and the engine speed. The over-speed of the internal combustion engine subjected to such αN control is controlled by setting limited engine speeds in at least two stages for stopping or suppressing combustion each time exceeding the limited engine speeds. In the case of three cylinders having respective exhaust systems combined, if it exceeds the primary limited engine speed, combustion in the second cylinder arranged at the center, e.g. is stopped or suppressed, and if it exceeds the secondary limited engine speed, combustion in the whole cylinders is stopped or suppressed.
