The rotor assembly (32) includes: a rotor shaft (22); at least one rotor disk (40) coupling to the rotor shaft such that a cooling path (94) is defined between the rotor shaft and the at least one rotor disk, wherein the at least one rotor disk includes a substantially cylindrical body extending between a radially inner edge (48) and a radially outer edge (50) and extending between upstream and downstream surfaces (52) and (54) in a substantially axial direction; and a cooling assembly (100) coupling to the at least one rotor disk, wherein the cooling assembly includes a first cooling plate (102) coupled to the downstream surface to define a cooling duct (112) between the first cooling plate and the downstream surface, and wherein the cooling duct is configured to channel a cooling fluid (96) from the cooling path toward the outer edge.
