PURPOSE: To improve charging/discharging characteristic by forming an alkaline battery of a positive electrode primarily composed of nickel hydroxide, a negative electrode primarily composed of hydrogen storage alloy, a separator material made of polyolefine resin fiber, and an electrolyte made of alkaline aqueous solution, and by regulating the amount of electrolytes by the separator material.
CONSTITUTION: At least one element chosen from a group consisting of zinc and cadmium is contained in a positive electrode to restrict higher dimension of nickel active material, and insufficiency of the amount of electrolyte due to the nickel active material is prevented. As a separator material, the nonwoven fabric of polyolefine resin fiber is used, and accumulation of hydrogen in a negative electrode is restricted, while degradation in the electrolyte holding property and gas permeability with the lapse of time are reduced. For the electrolyte injected into the battery, a relationship as expressed as 0.3≤X/(X+Y)≤0.5 is satisfied, where X is the weight of the electrolyte to be held by the separator material, and Y is the weight of the separator material, to restrict drying out of a separator. Degradation of battery performance can thus be prevented from low temperature to high temperature.
