Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a separation process comprising the supply of an organic phase to a continuous distillation column and the discharge of aqueous hydrochloric acid and benzyl chloride from the column top and benzyl alcohol and dibenzyl ether from the column bottom.
SOLUTION: A distillation column is continuously supplied through a side feeding part with a mixture of benzyl chloride, benzyl alcohol, dibenzyl ether and an aqueous hydrochloric acid obtained in the production of benzyl alcohol by the hydrolysis of benzyl chloride with water. The distillation column is operated under a column top pressure of 1-950mb, a mixture of benzyl chloride and aqueous hydrochloric acid is discharged from the column top and a mixture of benzyl alcohol and dibenzyl ether is extracted from the column bottom. The formation of dibenzyl ether during distillation can be prevented by this process.
