Abstract:

PURPOSE: To efficiently treat contaminated water by using a sheet obtd. by impregnating a water soluble ethylenic unsatd. monomer into a fibrous substrate and polymerizing the monomer.

CONSTITUTION: A fibrous substrate such as wood pulp, rayon or cotton is uniformly sprayed or coated with a water soluble ethylenic unsatd. monomer blended with a cross-linking agent such as methylenebisacrylamide or ethylene glycol glycidyl ether. The substrate is then dried with hot air, microwaves, IR or other means and the monomer is cross-linked. The resulting sheet can be effectively utilized for absorbing water contaminated by radioactivity.
