To provide a steel wire for arc welding which demonstrates satisfactory feeding properties even under a severe operating environment in which feed resistance becomes high by the bending, etc., of a liner, and to provide a method for manufacturing the steel wire for arc welding by which waste liquid processing is simplified in addition to toxicity reduction and efficiency enhancement and stable copper plating with satisfactory adhesion can be obtained.
This steel wire for arc welding and its manufacturing method is characterized in that the steel wire has a surface which is composed of a recessed part generated by cracks on the matrix of surface steel and a plated flat part, a plated layer is double layer plating consisting of the upper layer of copper plating with a deposit weight of 1.0 to 10 g/m2 and the lower layer of nickel plating with a deposit weight of 0.25 to 5.0 g/m2, surface roughness tp [L/Cv=30]=45 to 95%, Ra [L]=0.07 to 0.23 μm, and feed lubricant of 0.10 to 2.00 g per 10 kg of the wire is applied to the surface of the wire.
