To obtain a new terphenyl derivative composed of a specific polymerizable group, a methogen group and a spacer, and useful for affording polymer-distributed liquid crystal display elements resistant to external mechanical stress.
This new compound is a compound of formula I (Y11 to Y23 are each H or F, at least one of them being F; (n1) is 1-15) or a compound of formula II (Y31 to Y43 are the same as Y11 to Y23, respectively; (n3) is the same as (n1)), e.g. 2-(3'-fluoro-p-terphenyl-4-yloxy)ethyl methacrylate. The illustrated compound is prepared by reaction of 3'-fluoro-4-(2-hydroxyethoxy)-p- terphenyl with methacryloyl chloride in the presence of triethylamine. These compounds are each used, specifically, as a polymeric precursor or part thereof to form a polymer in a polymer-distributed liquid crystal display element bearing a light-modulating layer containing both liquid crystal and the polymer.
