Abstract:
PURPOSE:To accurately detect an address writing area in a simple and highly efficient way by converting the image pickup input picture of a letter mail into a block binary picture that defines a prescribed unit block area as a basis and detecting the address writing area based on the feature information on said binary picture. CONSTITUTION:The image pickup input picture of a letter mail is divided into the prescribed unit block areas and each of these block areas is regarded as a block binary picture which is shown in a binary form based on the picture feature information for each unit. Then the fare stamp surface/zip code column part and the advertisement/communication sentence part of an input picture are detected based on the projection features of the block binary picture and the knowledge of the letter mail. Then these detected parts are deleted out of the input picture and an address writing area is detected out of other parts based on the projection of the block binary picture. In such a way, the address writing area is detected simply and accurately.
