PURPOSE: To provide light emitting glass consisting of Eu2O3, R2O3 (R is an element such as Sc), MO (M is an element such as Mg) and B2O3 in a specified component ratio and having characteristics such as high luminance, a low softening point and very low water solubility.
CONSTITUTION: This light emitting glass having an emitted light distribution in the visible range when excited by ultraviolet rays has a composition represented by a general formula xEu2O3.yR2O3.zMO.vB2O3, wherein R is at least 1 kind of element selected from Sc, Y, La, Gd and Lu, M is at least 1 kind of element selected from Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba and Zn, 0.01≤x≤10mol%, 1≤y≤20%, 30≤z≤50%, 30≤v≤80% and 0.01≤x+y≤20%. Starting materials giving said composition by calcining are mixed and melted by heating in air at about 1,200°C for ≥ about 2hr. The melt is quenched by charging into water, dried, pulverized, and used as said glass.
