Abstract:

PURPOSE: To tune the wavelength of a tuning laser to a desired wavelength of a laser simply and rapidly by a method, wherein an absorption structure having a prescribed absorption level is arranged in a medium, which maintains standing waves having a prescribed wavelength of a laser, the strength of absorption of an absorbent material is made to vary and the wavelength of the tuning laser is controlled.
CONSTITUTION: Light input received by a front mirror 101 is propagated in a laser gain medium 103 and is reflected by a back mirror 102 to form progressing waves and retrogressing waves in a laser cavity. An absorbing layer 104 is arranged at the specified positions on the paths of the progressing and retrogressing waves and is constituted of two absorbing layers 104 and 1042. A laser has a tendency to operate under the condition of smallest loss, and in the case where the absorptivities of the layers 1041 and 1042 are equal to each other, a standing wave pattern 106 shows the smallest point at a point 107 and the distance between the point 107 and the layer 1041 and the distance between the point 107 and the layer 1042 become equal to each other. By adjusting the absorptitives of the layers 1041 and 1042, the waveforms of the standing wave are changed and the wavelength of a laser is controlled.
