To provide a vegetable unsaturated alcohol used as a raw material for a substitute surfactant for a nonylphenol-based surfactant, having good biodegradability in the environment, and having a low cloud point, and to provide a method for producing the same.
This unsaturated alcohol has an iodine value of more than 110 but not more than 140 and a clouding point of ≤15°C. The unsaturated alcohol is obtained by reducing a vegetable unsaturated fatty acid and/or its methyl ester in the presence of a zinc-based catalyst having a copper content of ≤30 ppm, wherein the vegetable unsaturated fatty acid and/or its methyl ester are obtained from (1) at least one kind of oil selected from the group consisting of soybean oil, colza oil, safflower oil, corn oil, cottonseed oil, sunflower oil, rice bran oil, and linseed oil and/or (2) at least one kind of already- used cooking oil for deep-frying selected from the other group consisting of the soybean oil, the colza oil, the safflower oil, the corn oil, the cottonseed oil, the sunflower oil, and the rice bran oil.
