To enable a vacuum cleaner to be used for a long time, and also facilitate the discharge of dust/dirt.
The vacuum cleaner is equipped with an electric blower which generates suction air, a centrifuging section 7 which separates dust/dirt from the suction air, a dust/dirt compressing plate 21 which constitutes the lower end part of the centrifuging section 7, and at the same time, is freely movably provided under the centrifuging section 7, and a dust/dirt accumulating section 8 which is provided under the centrifuging section 7, and accumulates dust/dirt being separated from the suction air by the centrifuging section 7. The vacuum cleaner is constituted in such a manner that when the operation of the electric blower is stopped, the dust/dirt compressing plate 21 is moved downward, and dust/dirt accumulated in the dust/dirt accumulating section 8 are pressed from the top. Thus, dust/dirt accumulated in the dust/dirt accumulating section 8 can be prevented from adhering to the external surface of a pre-filter 16 of the centrifuging section 7, and the use for a long period of time is made possible by maintaining the dust collecting performance. Also, when the dust/dirt compressing plate 21 is moved downward, dust/dirt collected on the dust/dirt compressing plate 21 in the pre-filter 16 of the centrifuging section 7 can be discharged to the dust/dirt accumulating section 8, and the discharge of dust/dirt from the vacuum cleaner body is facilitated.
