To adjust the axial position of the roller 41e of an input arm (cam hitting member) 41 in a variable valve gear mechanism 3 of an internal combustion engine 1.
The input arm 41 comprises a roller 41e rotatably supported on a spindle 41d installed between a pair of opposed forks 41cL, 41cR and with which the outer peripheral surface of a cam lobe 17 is brought into contact. Position adjusting shims 7 for adjusting the axial position of the roller 41e are interposed between the roller 41e and the forks 41cL, 41cR. Consequently, the axial position of the roller 41e between the pair of forks 41cL, 41cR can be changed by properly setting the thickness of the positioning adjusting shims 7 disposed on both axial sides of the roller 41e.
