PURPOSE: To automatically set a tape at an optimum static reproducing position by detecting the level of the envelope curve of an FM signal in a preset angular position during the operation in a moving image mode and calculating a correction level.

CONSTITUTION: A signal processing unit 11 outputs a signal indicating the instantaneous level of the envelop curve of the FM signal. A moving image level is measured and is accumulated in a moving image accumulator 12. The measured value is used for calculating the moving image level ratio. Next, the static level in the prescribed angle position is measured and is accumulated in a static level accumulator 13 when a switching device 10 indicates that the operation is switched to a static mode operation to a tape driving logic circuit 14. The measured value in the position which is the reference for the calculation of the moving image level ratio is used for the purpose of the level ratio calculation to the static mode. The resultant actual level and the desired level which is previously obtd. are used to calculate the coefft. of tape position correction and, thereafter, the latter is used for correcting the tape position.
