To provide a visible light communication system for enabling stable and reliable uplink communication.
A transmitter and receiver 1 transmits data to a terminal unit 3 by illumination light, and receives data sent from the terminal unit 3 by light. A receiver 2 is connected to a power line 4 as in the transmitter and receiver 1, and receives the data transmitted from the terminal unit 3 by light. The receiver 2 is provided at a position different from that of the transmitter and receiver 1. As a result, if the receiver 2 can receive the light from the terminal unit 3 even if the transmitter and receiver 1 cannot receive the light from the terminal unit 3, communication is enabled. For example, even if light to the transmitter and receiver 1 is blocked and the direction of light from the terminal unit 3 is changed, communication is enabled if the receiver 2 can receive the light, so that stable and reliable communication can be achieved.
