PURPOSE: To eliminate the cause of thread breakage by forming a thread layer with the specified traverse width from the winding start time so that a portion with a large winding diameter is not generated when winding the thread layer on a new bobbin in a takeup winder.

CONSTITUTION: The preset quantity of a thread is wound on a bobbin on a bobbin holder set at the winding position, the fully wound time (full package time T) is determined in advance. The drive of a traverse cam is stopped and the bobbin is rotated by inertia at the preset time T1 before the full package time T. The drive of a package is stopped at the full package time T, a new bobbin holder fitted with a vacant bobbin is exchanged with the fully wound bobbin holder, the new bobbin holder fitted with the vacant bobbin is located at the winding position, and winding is started. The drive of the bobbin holder fitted with the vacant bobbin is started after the revolving time T2 elapses, the drive of the traverse drum of the vacant bobbin is started when T3 elapses after the rotation of the fully wound bobbin is stopped.
