When a polarization separation monitor (3) detects that a correlation value of a first polarization signal and a second polarization signal is greater than a prescribed value, a control circuit (4) causes a filter tap coefficient update circuit (2) to re-execute initial convergence of tap coefficients. The polarization separation monitor (3) determines which one among four quadrants on an IQ plane the first polarization signal and the second polarization signal belong to, calculates the correlation value from the determination result, and compares the correlation value with the prescribed value. When data-on-axis positioned on an I-axis and a Q-axis on the IQ plane is present in the first polarization signal and the second polarization signal, a sign determination circuit (7) extracts the data-on-axis and associates, with one of values indicating the four quadrants on the IQ plane, each of positive data on the I-axis, negative data on the I-axis, positive data on the Q-axis, and negative data on the Q-axis among data-on-axis without duplication.
