The present invention addresses the problem of providing: a compound which enables the achievement of a liquid crystal composition that has a large Δn value, a large Δεr value, and good storage properties at room temperature or low temperatures; and a liquid crystal composition, a liquid crystal display element, a sensor, a liquid crystal lens, an optical communication device and an antenna, each of which uses this compound.　The present invention specifically provides: a compound which is represented by general formula (i) and comprises a specific indene structure and a specific side chain structure including an isothiocyanate (-NCS) group; and a liquid crystal composition, a liquid crystal display element, a sensor, a liquid crystal lens, an optical communication device and an antenna, each of which uses this compound.
