Abstract:
An electrode catalyst layer 10 to be used in a solid polymer fuel cell comprises: a catalyst material 12; a conductive carrier 13 that carries the catalyst material 12; a polymer electrolyte 14; and a fibrous material 15 containing nitrogen atoms. The ratio of the number of atoms of the nitrogen to the total number of atoms of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine, sulfur, and platinum elements is 2-20 at% as measured using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy on a specific region of a cross-section of the electrode catalyst layer. The fibrous material containing the nitrogen atoms accounts for at least 50 area% of the specific region, and the specific region does not include the catalyst material or the conductive carrier.
