Abstract:
Provided is an image encoding device for enhanced accuracy of a mode selection process and a movement search process utilizing prediction vectors, through appropriate computation of prediction vectors while avoiding macro blocks (MB) for which encoding is not yet finished, when carrying out pipeline processing in MB units. A search initiation point for a motion vector of an area targeted for encoding is determined from a prediction vector for the area targeted for encoding, which, employing motion vectors of surrounding blocks of the area targeted for encoding, has been determined according to a predetermined rule; and a motion vector search is initiated from the search initiation point. During calculation of the prediction vector, in the event that the size of the area targeted for encoding cannot be acquired, the size of the area targeted for encoding is determined from the size of an already encoded area other than the area targeted for encoding, and a motion vector is calculated. In the event that the motion vector of at least one surrounding block cannot be acquired, a prediction vector is calculated from the motion vector of an already encoded area other than the area targeted for encoding.
