Abstract:
The purpose of the present embodiment is to provide a liquid crystal optical element which can achieve a desired reflection performance and a method for producing the liquid crystal optical element. According to one embodiment, this liquid crystal element comprises: an optical waveguide part that has a first main surface and a second main surface opposite to the first main surface; an alignment film that is disposed on the second main surface; a liquid crystal layer that overlaps the alignment film, that has cholesteric liquid crystals, and that reflects, toward the optical waveguide part, at least a portion of light which has entered via the optical waveguide part; and a first protective layer that is transparent, that overlaps the liquid crystal layer and that is formed of a soluble polymer or a fluorine-based resin.
