Disclosed is a negative electrode for lithium secondary batteries comprising a separator, a negative electrode active material layer fixed to the separator for adsorbing/desorbing lithium ions, and a collector layer so formed on the other side of the negative electrode active material layer as to be opposite to the separator via the negative electrode active material layer. The negative electrode active material layer contains at least one substance selected from the group consisting of simple substance of silicon, silicon alloys, compounds containing silicon and oxygen, compounds containing silicon and nitrogen, compounds containing silicon and fluorine, simple substance of tin, tin alloys, compounds containing tin and oxygen, compounds containing tin and nitrogen and compounds containing tin and fluorine.
