Abstract:
Provided are an optical fiber production method and production device, wherein variations in the diameters of glass fibers are inhibited and an increase in the transfer loss is reduced by using an inexpensive inactive gas and an inexpensive auxiliary device. Also provided is an optical fiber produced by means of the aforementioned method and device. An optical fiber production device provided with a furnace core tube (13) to which a glass base material (11) for an optical fiber is inserted, and a heating means (15) disposed on the outside of the furnace core tube and for heating the furnace core tube from the outside, wherein an optical fiber is produced by drawing an optical fiber (12) while heating and melting the glass base material for an optical fiber and by externally guiding the drawn optical fiber from the outlet at the bottom part of the furnace core tube. A gas containing 50% or more of argon is used as the inactive gas. The bottom part of the furnace core tube is provided with a protective tube (17) having a length of Da (mm) and comprising: a heat insulating material region (17a) surrounded by a heat insulating material (18) having a length of Db (mm) on the top portion of the protective tube; and a non-heat insulating material region (17b) that is not surrounded by the heat insulating material and is disposed on the bottom portion of the protective tube. The temperature of the glass fiber at the outlet of the protective tube is set to be equal to or lower than 1500°C.
