Abstract:
Disclosed is transgenic yeast which has an excellent xylose metabolism rate even in the presence of a co-existing sugar.  Also disclosed is a method for producing ethanol by utilizing the transgenic yeast. The transgenic yeast has two or more copies of a cell-surface-presenting β-glucosidase gene and two or more copies of a xylose-metabolism-related gene introduced into the genome thereof or has a cell-surface-presenting β-glucosidase gene and two or more copies of a xylose-metabolism-related gene introduced into the genome thereof, and has a β-glucosidase activity (i.e., a 0.02 U/OD660 value) of 1 or greater.
