PURPOSE: To provide the active matrix display element which can enhance the brightness of a display screen by using strong light for irradiation, can prevent the deterioration in image quality and can be produced at a high non- defective rate.
CONSTITUTION: A light shielding film 6 formed by disposing apertures so as to oppose pixel electrodes 4 consists of a two-layered structure. This light shielding film is formed with the first layer 6a consisting of an alloy of high- reflectivity Al and high melting metal on the substrate side and, therefore, the temp. rise of the display element is prevented and the film is stable to chemicals and heat. Since the second layer 6b consisting of a low-reflectivity material is formed on the optical display medium side, the degradation in the characteristics of TFTs by generation of light scattering does not raise and the degradation in contrast, etc., by scattered light does not arise either.
