PURPOSE: To obtain a polymer which gives a persistent antimicrobial activity without releasing an antimicrobial agent by producing a polymer derived from ethylenically unsaturated monomers and having a phenolic antimicrobial agent covalently bound thereto.
CONSTITUTION: This antimicrobial polymer is derived from one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers and has a phenolic antimicrobial agent covalently bound thereto. Examples of the monomers preferably used include those that can be quaternized, or reacted with amine or hydroxyl groups. Examples of the polymers include those of maleic anhydride, methacrylic acid, glycidyl methacrylate and dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate. An especially preferable polymer is one having a structure represented by the formula, wherein X:(y+z) is 25:75; y:z is (10:090) to (65:35); and n and m are each 1 to 12.
