A cooling conveyor 10, a crusher 11, and a hopper 14 are connected in turn in an airtight manner to a port 2 for discharging carbonization residues from a carbonization oven 1. The conveyor 10 is of a water-cooled type enclosed in a casing 14 surrounded with a jacket 20 through which water is passed. The crusher 11 is a twin-screw shear type composed of two parallel shafts 25 driven in a manner that the edges 26 on the respective shafts 25 are in mesh with each other. A rotary valve 3 is disposed on the lower end of the hopper 14. The carbonization residues discharged from the oven 1 is cooled by means of the conveyor 10 and crushed into pieces 6b by means of the crusher 11, and sent to the hopper 4 to form a material seal 4 comprising a layer of the pieces 6b.
