PURPOSE: To charge a photoreceptor while hardly producing ozone by applying an electric field in the direction that the carrier can move on a photoreceptor while irradiating the photoreceptor with light so that the carrier produced is moved to the surface to charge the photoreceptor.
CONSTITUTION: An electric field is applied to a photoreceptor 5 comprising a conductive base body 3 and a photosensitive layer 4 by applying voltage from an external power supply to a transparent electrode 2 formed on a transparent supporting body 1,/while the photoreceptor 5 is irradiated with light 6. When the photoreceptor 5 is irradiated with light in a photosensitive wavelength region, pairs of holes and electrons are produced in the photoreceptor 5. When an electric field is applied to the photoreceptor 5 in this state, the carrier (holes or electrons) according to the direction of the electric field moves to the surface of the photoreceptor 5 and charges the surface of the photoreceptor 5. It is enough when the carrier mobility of the photoreceptor 5 under an electric field applied is in such a degree that the carrier reaches the surface of the photoreceptor 5 during the photoreceptor passes the area where the electric field is applied. By selectively irradiating the photoreceptor with light according to the image information, an electrostatic latent image can be formed.
