Not to inform a host computer that a standby portable medium is loaded by providing a means which allows a library device to recognize the standby medium as standby one.
A user inserts a standby physical medium into a media loading/ unloading slot. Then entries above a standby border number in a physical media management table are checked to decide whether a standby media storage place is full. When the storage place is not full, a media carrying robot 1240 carries the inserted physical medium 1320 to the free standby media storage place 1340. Then a value 0 is set to an entry of the physical media management table corresponding to the position number of a rack 1300 where the inserted physical medium 1320 is set. Then a standby media absence lamp is turned off. Further, it is decided whether or not there are sufficient standby media and when so, a standby media short lamp is turned off.
