To highly-accurately detect the dimension of a grinding wheel by an inexpensive means while suppressing rapid progress of aged deterioration with a simple configuration.
A grinding machine has a wheel head 23 for rotating a grinding wheel 8. First and second moving devices relatively move a workpiece and the grinding wheel 8 in a first direction that brings them close to each other and in a second direction intersecting with the first direction. A dresser 4 dresses the outer surface of the grinding wheel 8. The grinding machine includes a block piece 5 that detects the position of the grinding wheel 8 by being brought into contact with the outer surface of the grinding wheel 8 while moving the grinding wheel 8 in the second direction by the first and second moving devices. A control device 7 compares the stored reference position of the grinding wheel 8 with the detected position of the grinding wheel 8, detected by the contact of the outer surface of the grinding wheel 8 with the block piece 5, in order to calculate the actual grinding-wheel diameter and controls the first and second moving devices in order to correct the relative position of a workpiece W with respect to the grinding wheel 8.
