A hopper 30 for holding a stack of paper is installed in a position in which it is projected from an outer case 10, and a manual feed slot 24 is formed adjacent to a wall 25 covering a paper feed roller 42 which feeds the paper out from the hopper 30. The cover 32 of the hopper 30 and the front of the wall 25 serve as guide faces for insertion of the paper, and manual feed paper S2 can be inserted into the slot 24. The paper inserted is kept almost straight along the cover 32 and the front of the wall 25, with its end pressed against a pair of feed rollers 43, 44 by its own weight to ensure that it is fed by the pair of feed rollers 43, 44.
