An information processing method, which is capable of processing electronic documents including data with different attributes, includes analyzing in attribute units the layout structure of data contained in electronic documents (S502); and comparing the layout structure of data of a first attribute selected with the layout structure of data of a second attribute for which the data of the first attribute is referred to (S506). Based on the comparison result, if the layout structure of the data of the first attribute is different from the layout structure of the data of the second attribute, additional data is created and, according to the layout structure of one of the data, the layout structure of the other is changed (S507). The additional data created is registered as data for retrieval for associating the data of the first attribute with the data of the second attribute (S508).
