To obtain a novel compound that has excellent temperature depen dence of response speed by modifying the main chain skeleton of a ferroelectic liquid crystal compound.
This ferroelectric liquid crystal compound is represented by the formula ((m) is an integer of 4-14; (n) is an integer of 2-10; Cf is CF3 or CH3; * indicates an optically active carbon atom), typically 4-(1,1,1-trifluoro-2- alkoxycarbonyl 4'-alkenyloxy-2-fluorobiphenyl-4-caroxylate. This compound is prepared by chlorinating 4'-alkenyloxy-3-fluoro-4-biphenylcarboxylic acid with a chlorinating agent as thionyl chloride, allowing the resultant acid chloride to react with 1,1,1-trifluoro-2-alkyl 2-fluoro-4-hydroxy-benzoate by using trietylamine as an acid acceptor and separating and purifying the reaction product. A ferroelectric liquid crystal composition is obtained by formulating at least one of the product thereto.
