PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing m- or p-alkyl-substituted phenylalkanols in an inexpensive manner and in an extremely excellent yield.SOLUTION: In a method for producing phenylalkanols, an unsubstituted phenylalkanol is alkylated using an alkyl halide in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst to give a mixture of m- and p-alkyl-substituted phenylalkanols represented by the formula (I). Subsequently, the reaction mixture is worked up and the desired m-alkyl-substituted phenylalkanol represented by the formula (I) or the desired p-alkyl-substituted phenylalkanol represented by the formula (I) is separated off. The remaining mixture is returned into the reaction mixture and the resulting product is isomerized in the presence of the Friedel-Crafts catalyst to give the desired m- or p-alkyl-substituted phenylalkanol. In the formula (I), R1 represents Cto Calkyl; and R2 to R5 each independently represent H or methyl.SELECTED DRAWING: None
