Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a natural dye excellent in the results of color fastness test by using dried leaves of Ryukyu indigo.
SOLUTION: Leaves of Ryukyu indigo are dried in the sun, then laid on a bed, and subjected to watering and cutting to turn over, giving prepared indigo leaves. The prepared indigo leaves are mixed with an alkaline substance (e.g. charcoal lye or lime) and a nutrient (e.g. refined sake or starch) and then fermented. The bed is formed by successively forming a layer of chaff, a layer of sand, and a convexly shaped layer of clay contg. rice straws on a layer of gravel contg. pebbles. The prepared indigo leaves are produced by stacking Ryukyu indigo leaves on the bed and performing the watering and cutting to turn over when the fermentation temp. of the leaves begins to fall down after the temp. reaches its max., 55-65°C.
