To provide a method for operating a solid polymer fuel cell capable of stably obtaining high cell output from the beginning of operation for a long time even in the case where the amount of steam in a reaction gas being supplied to a cathode is reduced or made to zero, and to provide a fuel cell system operated based on this operation method.
In the solid polymer fuel cell, an ion exchange resin satisfying the condition that a moisture content W[%] at 90°C is specified to 100≤W≤400 is contained in a catalyst layer of the cathode arranged adjacently to a polymer electrolyte membrane, and when the fuel cell is operated, the value of water vapor partial pressure in the reaction gas being supplied to the cathode is adjusted to the value of saturated water vapor pressure at a temperature lower by 10°C than the operation temperature of the fuel cell or less.
