Abstract:
To provide a method for producing 2-naphthylethanol useful as a raw material for pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, electronic materials, etc., and to provide a method for producing 2-naphthyloxirane as the intermediate for 2-naphthylethanol.
The method for producing 2-naphthylethanol comprises oxidizing 2-vinylnaphthalene with an oxidizing agent such as an organic peracid, organic peroxide, inorganic oxidizing agent or hydrogen peroxide into 2-naphthyloxirane, which is then hydrogenated with a hydrogenating agent such as lithium aluminum hydride, sodium borohydride, potassium borohydride, sodium cyanoborohydride, sodium aluminum hydride, borane or hydrogen gas.
